Restorative Treatment: Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

example of onlay restorationIncreasingly popular are restorations that are fabricated in the lab or via Cad/Cam “in office” technology that produces a fired or milled restoration that is both aesthetically beautiful and extremely durable. These restorations are then cemented into place creating a stronger tooth when compared to other restorative materials such as amalgam or composite. While significantly more expensive than composite or amalgam restorations, we have found these restorations are becoming increasingly more and more popular in this age of Cosmetic Dentistry. They are also finally an excellent and ideal alternative to large metal restorations, and are often times the treatment of choice when a large metal restoration requires replacement, but the tooth does not yet require the full cuspal coverage of a crown. We would be happy to explain these new-aged restorative options to you.

A Porcelain Inlay or Onlay is typically a two visit procedure. Once the decay has been removed or the fracture site has been prepared, the area is thoroughly cleaned and dried with care in order to create the ideal environment for a final polyvinylsiloxane impression of the formally affected/prepared area. The impressions we create here are multi-dimensional in that they capture not only the area to be restored, but also the opposing dentition and neighboring teeth and tissue. The impression tray is so precise, it is totally patient friendly even for those with the most elevated gag reflex. The prepared area is then temporized with a Zinc Oxide Eugenol temporary sedative filling that the patient will wear for approximately two weeks until the new inlay or onlay is fabricated by a dental laboratory. At the second visit, the temporary is removed utilizing ultrasound (as opposed to drilling) and the inlay or onlay is seated and adjusted to the perfect position. Once the occlusion has been carefully checked for prematurities and the bite matched to the strike pattern of the original tooth, the restoration is cemented into place utilizing a new and uniquely designed bonding cement, which in effect fuses the restoration to the tooth, creating a strong and durable tooth and restoration. This cement is typically light cured. The patient will be able to chew and eat on this tooth and restoration immediately following the completion of this dental procedure.
